Diurnal Yarkovsky effect as a source of mobility of meter-sized asteroidal fragments I. Linear theory

چکیده

A linear theory for the heat conduction in a spherical, solid and rotating body illuminated by solar radiation is developed in detail. The principal aim is to compute the recoil force, due to thermally reemitted radiation, which is commonly known as the “Yarkovsky force”. We concentrate on the thermal effect which depends on the rotational period of a body rather than on the period of revolution around the Sun and deal with the general case of an arbitrary obliquity of the spin axis to the orbital plane. This “diurnal” thermal effect is considered to be an important source of mobility for meter-sized stony asteroidal fragments in the main belt. We compare our results with those of previous authors and show that the results of Peterson (1976) are accurate for meter-sized asteroidal bodies (although he used unrealistically long rotation periods).

Diurnal Yarkovsky effect as a source of mobility of meter-sized asteroidal fragments II. Non-sphericity effects

The diurnal Yarkovsky effect, a perturbing force on meter-sized orbiting bodies caused by anisotropic heating and emission of thermal radiation from small spinning solar system bodies, is computed for spheroidal-shaped bodies with an arbitrary flattening. The solution is derived in analytical form for a body which rotates around its axis of symmetry. A numerical solution is presented for the mo...

Orbital evolution of asteroidal fragments into the ν6 resonance via Yarkovsky effects

We analyze the dynamical evolution of asteroidal fragments released in the Flora region, near the inner edge of the main asteroid belt, and drifting into the ν6 secular resonance due to Yarkovsky non-gravitational effects. We find that fragments 5 to 20 m in size evolve under the “seasonal” Yarkovsky effect which causes a secular semimajor axis decay; they reach ν6 after a time shorter than the...

The Yarkovsky Seasonal Effect on Asteroidal Fragments: a Nonlinearized Theory for the Plane-parallel Case

The ““ seasonal ÏÏ Yarkovsky force is due to radiation pressure recoil, which acts on anisotropically emitting rotating bodies, heated by sunlight to di†erent temperatures at di†erent latitudes on their surfaces. This force gives rise to a signiÐcant draglike e†ect on rapidly spinning asteroid fragments B1È100 m in size. Here we present a new treatment of this e†ect, based on the numerical solu...

Irradiation Records, Cosmic-Ray Exposure Ages, and Transfer Times of Meteorites

During the 4.56-G.y. history of the solar system, every meteorite experienced at least one exposure to cosmic rays as a meter-sized meteoroid. The cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) age of a meteorite measures the integral time of exposure to galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). A fraction of meteoritic material was also irradiated by cosmic rays before ejection from kilometer-sized parent bodies (pre-irradiati...

Dynamical Evolution of Main Belt Meteoroids: NumericalSimulations Incorporating Planetary Perturbationsand Yarkovsky Thermal Forces

In the Yarkovsky effect, the recoil from asymmetric, reradiated thermal energy causes objects to undergo semimajor axis drift as a function of their spin, orbit, and material properties. We consider the role played by this mechanism in delivering meteoroids from parent bodies in the main belt to chaotic resonance zones where they can be transported to Earth-crossing orbits. Previous work has ap...
